WHY 2 DEGREES
There are several reasons why. Firstly, there is now a broad consensus that a rise of 2 degrees Celsius in average global temperature above pre-industrial levels is likely to be a 'tipping point' beyond which natural processes will automatically cause even greater temperature rises. More generally, climate change and peak oil are two closely-related threats that require urgent, effective and coordinated actions. 2Degrees aims to help in promoting actions on both these threats.
The third reason for 2Degrees is to utilize the unique 2 degrees of separation many of us find ourselves experiencing in this part of the world. If we remind ourselves that we live in communities and we need to act together we can respond effectively to climate change and peak oil.
We at 2Degrees have closely followed debates on climate change and peak oil for a number of years. There are a large number of websites that address aspects of these issues and we do not seek to duplicate this valuable resource.
What 2Degrees aims to do differently is to use the power of outdoor advertising to get the message out that urgent and effective action is required - action beyond that currently considered acceptable in Australia by the two major political parties or the mainstream media.
We believe that effective action must be based on the best scientific information available and not just on what is perceived to be political palatable at the time. It is our view that campaigns aimed primarily at changing individual behaviour are limited and will not achieve the scale of change required within the limited time available. Hence, we aim to communicate to levels of government and put pressure on them to respond to community’s needs.
While not claiming to be the font of knowledge on climate change or peak oil, we believe the principles for action proposed by 2Degrees form a sound foundation for effective action on climate change and peak oil. If at any time we become convinced that any of the principles we espouse are incorrect, we will not hesitate to update the 2Degrees website accordingly.
